Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, who has travelled to Russia along with President Ebrahim Raisi, on January 20 met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. The two top diplomats held talks over issues of mutual interest.
In the meeting, Amir Abdollahian and Lavrov referred to the expanding ties between Ian and Russia, saying the meeting between the presidents of the two countries shows Tehran and Moscow’s seriousness about further developing bilateral relations. They also expressed hope that relevant bodies of Iran and Russia will implement the agreements reached at the level of presidents of the two countries as soon as possible.
Amir Abdollahian also spoke of problems faced by some Iranian passengers at Moscow’s airport and firmly demanded his Russian counterpart take immediate action to resolve those problems.
The top Russian diplomat for his part described President Raisi’s visit to Russia as an important development in bilateral ties and underlined that the way has been paved for expanding the Tehran-Moscow relations.
Lavrov expressed hope that economic projects that are currently being implemented by Russian companies in Iran will be complete as soon as possible.
The top Russian diplomat also described joint efforts to resolve consulate problems including airport hurdles as important. He underlined the need for resolving the existing problems by relevant bodies. Lavrov noted that the key problem is that some Iranian passengers do not complete the visa application forms properly and fail to accurately declare the purpose of their visit to Russia at Moscow’s airport.
The foreign ministers of Iran and Russia also discussed the latest regional and international developments and the state of the Vienna talks. Amir Abdollahian and Lavrov underlined the necessity of bilateral and multilateral cooperation in this regard.
Elsewhere in their discussions, the two top diplomats underlined the need to finalize the roadmap of relations between Iran and Russian that was put forth during the meeting between presidents of two countries.
They also exchanged views over the latest developments in Afghanistan and Yemen as well as the Vienna talks aimed at removing the anti-Iran sanctions.
The two foreign ministers said the only solution to the situation in Afghanistan is the formation of an inclusive government with the participation of all ethnic groups of the country.
As for Yemen, Amir Abdollahian and Lavrov underlined that the country’s crisis can only be resolved through political means based on a ceasefire, the removal of the siege on Yemeni people and dialog between Yemeni factions.
