Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, who is in Beirut for talks with Lebanon’s officials, has held talks with his Lebanese counterpart Abdullah Bu Habib over most important issues of mutual interest between the two countries at bilateral, regional and international levels. While stressing the importance of bilateral ties, the Iranian foreign minister highlighted the need to hold a joint economic commission at the earliest opportunity after the formation of the new government of Lebanon and to expand bilateral trade ties. Amirabdolalhian further noted that Tehran and Beirut need to boost ties in various spheres. He announced the Islamic Republic of Iran’s readiness for the expansion of bilateral relations with Lebanon in all fields and for any type of cooperation in areas requested by the Lebanese government in order to help the people of this country regardless of their ethnicity and religion. The top Iranian diplomat noted that in order to solve the energy and electricity crisis in Lebanon, the Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to share with Lebanon its experiences in the field of construction and in operation of power plants as well as maintenance thereof. As for the developments in the internal affairs of Lebanon, Amirabdollahian invited Lebanese factions to discuss the election of their president and to complete the political process in the country as soon as possible. He said Lebanese officials have the power and competence required to elect their president and complete the political process. Amirabdollahian further warned of the dangers posed by the Zionist regime against the peace and security of the region and outlined the developments leading to the Tehran-Riyadh talks and their agreement to restore their diplomatic relations. In the meantime, the foreign minister pointed out that the Iran-Saudi Arabia rapprochement has angered the Zionist regime. Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdullah Bu Habib for his part explained the current situation in Lebanon, especially the problems caused by the failure to elect a president in the country. Bu Habib then welcomed the agreement between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia and the resumption of relations between them. He expressed hope that the renewal of ties between Tehran and Riyadh will have positive implications for the entire region, including Lebanon. Developments in Palestine, Afghanistan, Yemen, Sudan and Ukraine were among other issues over which the foreign ministers of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Lebanon exchanged views in this meeting. Amirabdollahian voiced concern over the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan. He also spoke about Ukraine. The Iranian foreign minister outlined Tehran’s stance in this regard, saying Iran’s policy is to not support the war in Ukraine.
