Iranian foreign minister, UN chief hold phone conversation
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and Antonio Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, discussed some regional and international developments
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and Antonio Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations, discussed some regional and international developments, including the latest developments in Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine, the cooperation between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran, and the latest status of negotiations to lift anti-Iran sanctions. Amirabdollahian positively evaluated the recent meeting of the United Nations in Doha regarding Afghanistan, which was held at the initiative of the Secretary General, and said the number of Afghan refugees in Iran was more than five million and added, “Handling this huge number of refugees requires international attention and support.” Appreciating the role and support of the Secretary General of the United Nations in regional dialogues, Amirabdollahian added, “We welcome your idea for a regional foreign ministers’ meeting.” The Iranian foreign minister expressed hope that the war and siege of Yemen would end as soon as possible. Emphasizing the Islamic Republic of Iran’s opposition to the war in Ukraine, he expressed hope that the parties would return to the path of dialog and everyone would witness the end of the war and the establishment of peace. The Iranian foreign minister described the cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency as moving in the right direction. Referring to the recent aggressions of the Zionist regime against Gaza, Amirabdollahian considered the actions of the extremist and occupying administration of Israel to be a serious threat to the peace and security of the region and emphasized, “The recent developments showed that these inhumane actions of the Zionist regime will not be tolerated by the Palestinian resistance groups and their response is strong.” In the end, Amirabdollahian referred to the international summit on fighting dust, which will be held in Iran in September with the cooperation of the United Nations, and pointed out, “Dust is a dangerous and worrying environmental phenomenon that needs to be combated. It requires the cooperation of all countries in the international arena.” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in turn, called Iran an important country in the region and welcomed the revival of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran and said that this development could be the beginning of strengthening constructive relations in the region. He said about the Doha Summit on Afghanistan that all parties agreed on the creation of an inclusive government in Afghanistan, the fight against terrorism, the support and strengthening of the Afghan economy, the fight against drug production and trafficking, and the right to education and work for women in this country. He once again praised Iran’s role in accepting Afghan refugees and emphasized the need for international support for Iran in this regard. Regarding Ukraine, and referring to the peace initiative of African leaders and the Istanbul meeting to extend the export of grain and agricultural fertilizers, Guterres expressed hope that the war would end as soon as possible. The Secretary General of the United Nations, referring to the necessity of a permanent ceasefire in Yemen, thanked Iran for its constructive role in the region
