The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran considers the unlawful, unjustified, and duplicitous decision of the Foreign Ministers of the European Union to level baseless accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran and to label the proud Islamic Revolution Guard Corps as an action directed against the entire Iranian nation, and condemns it in the strongest possible terms. The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps, as an inseparable component of the official armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in accordance with the Constitution, has played an unparalleled and honorable role in safeguarding Iran’s sovereignty and national security, preserving regional stability, and combating terrorism, including the very Daesh terrorism that was the product of the coalition and machinations of certain European countries and the United States. Any designation of a sovereign and official institution as “terrorist” constitutes a dangerous precedent, a flagrant violation of the principle of the rule of law in international relations, and an open disregard for the fundamental principles of international law, including respect for state sovereignty and the prohibition of interference in the internal affairs of states. This provocative, wholly irresponsible, and insulting action—which was undoubtedly designed and implemented to gratify a genocidal and occupying regime and its war-mongering supporters in the United States—inflicts yet another fatal blow to the standing and credibility of the European Union as a bloc that could have played a constructive role in international developments, and further propels the world toward lawlessness and the rule of the jungle. “Terrorism,” in its precise sense, is a descriptor that, in light of the conduct of the military forces of European Union member states in unlawful or quasi-lawful missions of Western coalitions, including NATO, over recent decades—inter alia in Africa, Iraq, and Afghanistan—and the heinous crimes committed by them against millions of innocent people in these regions, should properly be applied to those forces. The repugnant claim by the European parties of concern for the human rights of Iranians is a blatant falsehood and a deceitful assertion. European parties must be held accountable for their crimes resulting from the gross violation of the fundamental human rights of Iranians, whether through their assistance in the imposed war of Saddam Hussein’s regime against Iran in the 1980s or through the imposition of inhumane sanctions and the enforcement of the United States’ cruel sanctions over the past two decades. Their claims regarding the “denial of impunity” amount to a bitter irony; European parties not only made no effort to prevent the impunity of the Israeli regime for the genocide of the Palestinian people, but have consistently stood alongside the occupying and genocidal party and, during the Israeli regime’s military aggression against Iran, acted as accomplices to that regime. It is evident that responsibility for the political, legal, and security consequences arising from such an ill-conceived decision rests with European policymakers, particularly its designers and instigators. The Islamic Republic of Iran, while reaffirming its resolve to defend its sovereignty and national security against any foreign interference and terrorist mischief, will take all necessary measures to safeguard the interests and legitimate rights of the Iranian nation in response to this unlawful and anti-Iranian action by the European Union.
