Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Toshimitsu Motegi, Foreign Minister of Japan, held a telephone conversation at noon on Tuesday, discussing and exchanging views on bilateral issues as well as the latest regional and international developments. The Iranian foreign minister attributed responsibility for the current tensions in the region to the United States’ regrettable violation of its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum, stressing that the solution is simple. He said the US side’s return to and compliance with its commitments and its signature under the Islamabad Memorandum would pave the way for a return to normal conditions. Araghchi also outlined the latest status of Iran-Oman talks on the Strait of Hormuz, reporting significant progress in the two countries’ discussions on establishing a temporary transit route through the strait. He stressed the need to continue consultations between the two countries to reach an agreement on mechanisms for the future management of the Strait of Hormuz. Japan’s foreign minister, for his part, expressed concern over the escalation of tensions in the region and stressed the need for continued consultations and diplomatic coordination among regional countries and other stakeholders, with the aim of ensuring security in the region and free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian and Japanese foreign ministers also agreed to follow up on a number of bilateral and consular issues.
