Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who has traveled to New York to attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, met and held talks with Ignazio Cassis, Foreign Minister of Switzerland, on the sidelines of the session on Tuesday morning. The two sides discussed and exchanged views on Iran-Switzerland bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments. The Iranian Foreign Minister explained the positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding regional developments following the US-Israeli acts of aggression against Iran and the continuation of interventionist actions, the maritime blockade and economic warfare against the Iranian people. He underscored the responsibility of all countries to safeguard the UN Charter and international law, particularly the principle prohibiting the use of force. Referring to the war crimes committed by the United States and Israel against Iran during their military aggression over the past year and a half, he stressed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s determination to resolutely defend its security and national sovereignty. Referring to the repeated breaches of commitments by the United States, including its violation of the Islamabad Understanding and the escalation of its acts of aggression against Iran, Araghchi recalled the responsibility of the international community to hold the United States accountable for the consequences of its unlawful actions. Araghchi also referred to the gross violations of international humanitarian law by the United States and the Israeli regime and the commission of numerous war crimes, including the Minab and Lamerd tragedies. He underscored the duty of all states parties to the 1949 Geneva Conventions to pursue and punish the perpetrators in accordance with the fundamental rule of “respect for and ensuring respect for international humanitarian law.” He warned that indifference toward genocide and war crimes, as well as the continued impunity of perpetrators, would have far-reaching consequences for the entire world and all countries. The two sides also discussed and exchanged views on Iran-Switzerland cooperation aimed at helping strengthen peace and stability in the region.
