Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi and Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein held talks on Tuesday evening on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the progress of cooperation between the two countries in various areas, including economic, trade, consular and security affairs, and stressed the continuation of efforts to expand relations in all areas of mutual interest. The foreign ministers of Iran and Iraq described safeguarding the security of their shared border as highly important and stressed the importance of implementing the agreements reached in this regard and effectively confronting terrorist activities. The Iranian foreign minister, explaining the latest developments concerning shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, including the understanding reached between Iran and Oman to establish safe routes for commercial shipping, stressed that the insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz is solely the result of the aggressive actions of the United States and the Israeli regime, and that restoring security to the strait requires an end to the US actions that are causing insecurity. The Iranian foreign minister also stressed the need for all countries in the region to adhere to the principle of good-neighborliness, particularly by preventing aggressors from using their territory and facilities to prepare for and carry out illegal and aggressive actions against Iran. He noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran is determined and serious in defending its sovereignty and national interests.
