Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who is in New York to attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, held talks with Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Brandson on the sidelines of the session. The two sides discussed and exchanged views on Iran-Netherlands bilateral relations as well as regional and international issues. The Iranian foreign minister strongly criticized the double standards of European countries toward developments in the region, particularly their silence and leniency regarding the aggressive actions and crimes committed by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran. He noted that European countries cannot, on the one hand, claim to support the rule of law and human rights and, on the other, remain indifferent to, or even support, the overt military aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran. The Iranian foreign minister also recalled Iran’s responsible approach in using diplomacy to remove US pretexts concerning the nuclear issue, and described the United States’ repeated breaches of its commitments and its warmongering as the main cause of the current insecurity in the Persian Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that the only way to restore peace and stability in the region is to halt the illegal and aggressive actions of the United States and respect Iran’s rights and national interests. The Dutch foreign minister, for his part, stressed the importance of using diplomacy and outlined his country’s views on ongoing developments in the region and interactions between Iran and Europe.
