FM Amirabdollahian stresses building up Iran-Malta trade on cordial relations

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian met with Maltese Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Ian Borg on Thursday on the fringes of the United Nations General Assembly summit in New York

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian met with Maltese Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Ian Borg on Thursday on the fringes of the United Nations General Assembly summit in New York.

Amirabdollahian pointed out the good history of trade cooperation between the two countries and expressed hope that the cooperation will soon get back on the right track.

The Iranian foreign minister underlined the high capacity for cooperation between the two countries in the fields of fisheries, agriculture, medicine and technology, and said “We are interested in boosting the cooperation between the two countries in the fields of ports and shipping.”

He also touched on Malta’s membership in the UN Security Council, saying it was an opportunity to play a constructive role in international arena.

Amirabdollahian also referred to Malta’s membership in the European Union and European structures, saying that in his meeting with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, they agreed that Iran and the EU should hold stronger talks.

Amirabdollahian also expounded Iran’s stance on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and negotiations to lift the sanctions, Palestine as well as Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the Maltese minister for foreign and European affairs said he was pleased with the meeting, and said his country wanted “friendly and constructive” cooperation with Iran.

He said, “We always need to meet and talk to find out about and understand the developments better,” adding, “We back the progress in positive developments in Iran’s foreign and regional relations.”
