The spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baqaei, condemned the US Navy’s military aggression against a commercial vessel carrying Venezuelan oil near that country’s coast, and its seizure, as a clear example of “state piracy.”
The spokesperson stated that the US’ act of detaining and seizing commercial vessels belonging to other countries is a blatant disregard for international law and a serious violation of the principles governing international maritime safety and security.
Baqaei emphasized that invoking US domestic laws and its illegal sanctions to justify such an action in no way alters the unlawful and criminal nature of this “armed robbery at sea.”
Warning about the consequences and repercussions of the continuation of such coercive behavior for international peace, security, and trade, the spokesperson underlined the responsibility of all governments and relevant international bodies to oppose such illegal actions and hold the US accountable.
