Irans FM meets with speaker of Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives

At the meeting, Araghchi referred to the important position of the African continent in the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the historical and friendly relations between Iran and Ethiopia. He underlined Iran’s determination to comprehensively expand relations with this country on the basis of mutual interests, particularly through strengthening parliamentary cooperation and parliamentary friendship groups.
Araghchi also underscored the importance of the strategic position of the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea for ensuring security and sustainable peace in the region and the world, and described cooperation among regional countries as essential to help stabilize lasting security and secure the interests of all countries without foreign interference.
The top Iranian diplomat further described the holding of a new round of meetings of the Iran–Ethiopia Joint Economic Commission as important for following up the process of expanding relations and for familiarizing the public and private sectors of both countries with each other’s capacities and capabilities. Araghchi announced Iran’s readiness to expand cooperation with Ethiopia in regional and international forums, including the African Union and the BRICS Cooperation Organization.
The speaker of Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives for his part said he was pleased to visit Tehran and described Iran and Ethiopia as two countries with a long historical and ancient civilizational background that possess significant potential for expanding relations in various political, cultural, economic, and commercial fields.
Referring to the 75-year history of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Chafo expressed hope that, with the holding of the Joint Economic Commission meeting, the two sides will witness the further development of Tehran–Addis Ababa relations in various areas, especially in the economic and commercial fields.
They also discussed and exchanged views on several issues of mutual interest at the regional and international levels, and reached an understanding on the necessity of continuing regular and sustained consultations at the political level, as well as reciprocal visits by senior officials of the two countries.
