Joint statement by the Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Iran
During the visit of His Excellency Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran and His Excellency Seyyed Abbas Araghchi Minister of Foreign Affairs to Muscat the Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Iran held discussions.
During the visit of His Excellency Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and His Excellency Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to Muscat, the Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Iran held discussions.
During this visit, the Iranian delegation met and held talks with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, as well as with His Excellency Sayyid Badr al-Busaidi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman.
The Sultanate of Oman once again expressed its support for the "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding" signed between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, and emphasized the importance of continuing dialogue and coordination for the successful implementation of this memorandum.
The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Sultanate of Oman, as the two littoral states of the Strait of Hormuz, reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring safe passage through this waterway, in accordance with the relevant provisions of international law, while at the same time insisting on their sovereignty and sovereign rights over the territorial waters located in the Strait of Hormuz. The two sides also exchanged views on issues related to the Strait of Hormuz within the framework of the provisions of the "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding."
The two countries agreed to continue their discussions on this matter through the formation of a joint committee between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs, in order to reach understandings regarding the future management of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the related services to be provided in this context, as well as the costs pertaining to these services, in accordance with international standards. In this regard, the parties also agreed to hold consultations and discussions with the littoral states of the region, as well as with other relevant parties.
The parties emphasized that all arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz must fully respect the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the two littoral states.
The Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Iran once again reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the Strait of Hormuz as a safe and open waterway for international shipping. The two sides also underscored the importance of continued cooperation to enhance maritime safety, freedom of navigation, and regional stability.
