Jean Arnault, the United Nations Special Representative for Lebanon, who is in Tehran for consultations with Iranian officials, met on Sunday afternoon with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.
Expressing his sympathy and condolences over the martyrdom of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and a number of Iranian officials and citizens during the US-Israeli military aggression against Iran, the UN representative for Lebanon stressed the importance of comprehensive efforts to establish peace and stability in the region.
Arnault also presented an assessment of the situation in Lebanon and the efforts undertaken by the United Nations to consolidate the ceasefire and bring an end to the war in the region. He expressed hope that the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Termination of the War between Iran and the United States, together with enhanced cooperation among the countries of the region, would lead to lasting peace and security in the region, particularly in Lebanon.
The Iranian foreign minister, while thanking the UN representative for his sympathy and condolences, strongly condemned the repeated unlawful US attacks against Iran, the violation of the arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the continued military aggression and terrorist acts by the Israeli regime against Lebanon. He held the treaty-breaking US regime responsible for the dangerous consequences of this escalation and underscored the need for the United Nations to adopt a firm and unequivocal position in condemning US acts of aggression.
Araghchi also reaffirmed the Islamic Republic of Iran's continued comprehensive support for the people of Lebanon, as well as the country's territorial integrity and national sovereignty, and stressed the need to pursue an end to the Israeli regime's aggression and occupation of Lebanon.
