Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the New US Economic Sanctions Against Iran

Simultaneously with the anniversary of the infamous coup of 28 Mordad 1332 (19 August 1953) the ruling establishment of the United States claimed to impose extensive economic and commercial sanctions against the Iranian nation. This action is not only another sign of the continuation of 73 years of hostility and enmity by American policymakers toward the Iranian people but also proof of the anti-human law-breaking and arrogant nature of the US ruling establishment.

Simultaneously with the anniversary of the infamous coup of 28 Mordad 1332 (19 August 1953), the ruling establishment of the United States claimed to impose extensive economic and commercial sanctions against the Iranian nation. This action is not only another sign of the continuation of 73 years of hostility and enmity by American policymakers toward the Iranian people, but also proof of the anti-human, law-breaking, and arrogant nature of the US ruling establishment.

Without a doubt, the US economic sanctions against Iran, which target the fundamental human rights of every single Iranian citizen, constitute an instance of “economic terrorism” and a “crime against humanity,” and the instigators and perpetrators of these sanctions, due to the commission of such heinous crimes, deserve to be tried and punished.

These sanctions, which come in the wake of the American-Zionist imposed wars of the past year and a half against Iran and the failure to advance their demonic goals of forcing the Iranian nation to surrender to their illegal and anti-human ambitions, merely lengthen the list of crimes committed by the United States against Iran. Yet they will undoubtedly have not the slightest effect on the determination of Iranians to safeguard Iran’s independence, dignity, and national sovereignty.

Sanctions and economic pressure are the other side of the coin of war and military aggression, and America’s pathological addiction to these two has not only placed global peace and security under tangible threat but has also plunged human civilization into an unprecedented moral degeneration. Accordingly, any government that believes in the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, including the principle of respect for the national sovereignty of states, cannot remain indifferent to the continuation of America’s blatant law-breaking and confrontation with fundamental international norms.

America’s action in pompously announcing the new sanctions, while amounting to an explicit admission of committing a crime against humanity, is the continuation of a policy that has already been tested and failed. Re-testing it will certainly yield no result other than a repetition of past failures and the disgrace of the designers and perpetrators of this policy. Of course, responsibility for its consequences and repercussions will rest with the US government and the designers and executors of this policy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while strongly condemning America’s action in intensifying the illegal and anti-human sanctions against the Iranian nation, emphasizes that the Islamic Republic of Iran is steadfast and determined in defending its security and national interests and in confronting America’s military, economic, political, and psychological assaults and pressures. Relying on its unparalleled national capabilities and taking into account the experiences of seven decades of all-out resistance against America’s policy of pressure, intervention, military aggression, and state terrorism against Iran, the Islamic Republic of Iran will utilize all tools and capacities to repel the evil of the American-Zionist enemy and to safeguard Iran’s national interests.
