Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on US economic terrorism against Iran

In continuation of its hostile and unlawful policies against Iran the US government on Monday August 24 2026 unveiled a new wave of economic terrorism against Iran under the title of “Economic Exclusion Operation” which constitutes US state terrorism against Iran and the world.

In continuation of its hostile and unlawful policies against Iran, the US government on Monday, August 24, 2026, unveiled a new wave of economic terrorism against Iran under the title of “Economic Exclusion Operation,” which constitutes US state terrorism against Iran and the world.

The United States’ abuse of the dollar as a tool to intimidate other countries and force them to comply with its interventionist policies, which violate international law, in relation to Iran constitutes a violation of the national sovereignty and the right to self-determination of all United Nations Member States.
US sanctions against Iran, by virtue of both their nature and their consequences, constitute a flagrant violation of the UN Charter. These sanctions violate the principle of “non-intervention in the internal affairs of States” and the principle of “the prohibition of any obstruction to cooperation among States,” as emphasized, inter alia, in paragraph 2(k) of the “Declaration on the Inadmissibility of Intervention and Interference in the Internal Affairs of States” (Resolution 36/103 of December 9, 1981) and the “Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States” (General Assembly Resolution 2625 of October 24, 1970).

The declaration of economic war against Iran is a continuation of the war of aggression that the United States and the Israeli regime have waged against Iran over the past year and a half under false and baseless pretexts, putting regional and international peace and security at risk. All of these actions constitute violations of international law.
Unfortunately, the indifference and appeasement of the United Nations system and its Member States toward the flagrant violations of international law by the United States and the Israeli regime have led to the emergence of an extremely dangerous pattern of lawlessness and the commission of the most serious international crimes by them, the consequences of which have placed the entirety of human civilization under an unprecedented threat.

The “Economic Exclusion Operation” in itself demonstrates the criminal intent of its planners and implementers to inflict pain and suffering on the Iranian people and deprive Iranian citizens of their fundamental human rights and therefore constitutes an international crime and a crime against humanity.
This policy constitutes an explicit violation of the fundamental human rights norms enshrined in the human rights declarations and covenants, and is contrary to paragraph 2 of Article 1 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
US sanctions also constitute a continuing violation of the October 3, 2018 order of the International Court of Justice, which obliges the United States to remove all obstacles and restrictions on the free flow of trade, including food and agricultural products, medicines and medical devices, equipment and services essential for civil aviation safety, and related funds.
The new US sanctions policy has created a new situation, and it is necessary for the international community, including the organs of the United Nations, to take the necessary measures to safeguard the rule of law and the principles of the UN Charter.

US economic sanctions against Iran, regardless of their name or designation, are entirely unlawful and unjustified measures that violate the UN Charter, international humanitarian law and human rights. Accordingly, all States are obliged to refrain from implementing such sanctions. All States are also obliged to refrain from recognizing or endorsing situations or effects arising from these unlawful measures.

Participation in the implementation of US unilateral sanctions against Iran amounts to complicity in imposing the unlawful will of one State upon sovereign States and disrupting their legitimate economic and trade relations. This would constitute participation in undermining the most important principle of the UN Charter, namely, “respect for the sovereign equality” of States.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while condemning US economic terrorism, reaffirms the Iranian nation’s determination to use all available capacities to defend the homeland against the military, economic and hybrid warfare waged by the US-Israeli side.
There is no doubt that the Iranian people, united and resolute, drawing on their great civilizational heritage and the inspiring teachings of their religious and national traditions, and benefiting from the profound experiences of recent decades, will thwart the malign actions of their enemies and continue to strengthen the power and authority of our homeland day by day.
