Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who has traveled to Baghdad to attend the 52nd Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), met and held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty on the sidelines of the session on Saturday morning.
During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations, regional and international developments.
Referring to the rationale behind the establishment of the OIC, the Iranian foreign minister described the issue of Palestine as the most important issue in the Islamic world. Recalling the genocide of Palestinians and the crimes committed in occupied Palestine, he stressed the need for urgent and joint action by the Muslim Ummah to end occupation and genocide and bring an end to the Israeli regime’s impunity.
Iran’s positions on regional developments were also discussed in the meeting. Araghchi noted that the insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz was a direct consequence of the aggressive actions of the United States and the Zionist regime, which began on February 28 and have continued in various forms ever since.
Emphasizing Iran’s commitment to diplomacy and peace in the region, the Iranian foreign minister recalled that the Islamic Republic of Iran had consistently pursued diplomacy responsibly with a view to reducing tensions. However, he said, the American side had repeatedly reneged on its commitments and, most recently, violated its pledge just two weeks after signing an understanding to end the war.
Araghchi also briefed his Egyptian counterpart on the latest diplomatic consultations conducted through mediators.
Developments in the Arabian Peninsula were also discussed and views were exchanged. Expressing Iran’s readiness to provide any assistance to help end the hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, Araghchi stressed that 12 years of tensions and conflict had demonstrated that there was no military solution or approach to the Yemen issue.
