Iran Armenia Foreign Ministers meet in Tehran

Ararat Mirzoyan Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia who is visiting Tehran at the head of a diplomatic delegation met and held talks with Seyed Abbas Araghchi Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Monday morning.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed and exchanged views on Tehran–Yerevan relations. They reviewed the growing trend of bilateral cooperation in various areas of mutual interest and reaffirmed the determination of the leaders of Iran and Armenia to develop and deepen bilateral relations.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, referring to the long-standing and enduring ties between the Iranian and Armenian peoples, emphasized the Islamic Republic of Iran’s approach of seeking to expand relations with its neighbors, particularly in the Caucasus and Central Asia.

He stressed that the Islamic Republic attaches special importance to its friendly and steadily growing relations with Armenia and considers the ever-increasing interactions and relations with the countries of the Caucasus and Central Asia as a guarantee of security and peace for all countries of the region and as a means of promoting economic growth and prosperity for the peoples of the region.

The Armenian Foreign Minister expressed his pleasure at visiting Tehran, underscored the strategic nature of Iran-Armenia relations and Yerevan’s continued commitment and determination to expand cooperation with Iran, and expressed hope that the two countries’ relations would be further deepened with the signing of the Iran-Armenia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement.

During the meeting, the foreign ministers of Iran and Armenia held consultations on ways to further strengthen cooperation in the economic, political, trade, transportation and energy fields.

The two sides also discussed and exchanged views on developments in the Caucasus and West and South Asia.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, explaining the Islamic Republic of Iran’s positions on the importance of peace and stability in the Caucasus, welcomed the continuation of the positive trend in interactions and relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan. He announced Iran’s readiness to continue dialogue and multilateral cooperation, including within the 3+3 framework, to help consolidate the peace process and strengthen regional connectivity and cooperation. Araghchi also emphasized the importance of paying attention to the consequences and concerns arising from the presence and interference of third parties in the affairs of the Caucasus region, and said that lasting peace and stability in the region depend on the resolution of regional issues by the countries of the region themselves and preventing interference by extra-regional powers.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also briefed his Armenian counterpart on developments in the West Asia region, particularly the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Referring to the destructive and dangerous consequences of the US and Israeli regime’s military aggression against Iran, which is the main cause and factor behind insecurity in commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, he stressed: “The Islamic Republic of Iran has firmly defended and will continue to defend its national interests and security, while it has never hesitated to use diplomatic means to prevent the escalation of tensions.”

The two sides also discussed and exchanged views on coordination at the level of the United Nations and other multilateral organizations and arrangements.
